What Not To Say (or do)

@ 12:39 PM (6 months, 12 days ago)
There seems to be an influx of newbies hitting the grid, with no idea about manners or courtesy around others. So I've posted this to give those av's who are a little confused the chance to learn some big no no's before they upset the wrong av.
Please feel free to comment and add to the list.

1. Walking up to a cute avatar and saying anything along the lines of "you are hot, can we have sex?"

Lets begin with the obvious point here. Secondlife is a world of mesh characters who can dress that mesh in any way they like. An avatar can choose they're skin, shape, and hair, and style themselves in ways that are only seen in the top fashion houses in Real Life. Therefore you are in a world full of beautiful people. Less than perfect people are in the definate minority, and look the way they do through choice. So, telling someone they look hot isn't going to get you anywhere with most.
If you really want to pick someone up, make sure you have shed your newbie looks. Make an effort and use your intellect to strike up a good conversation.
Onto the second point. Honestly, would you walk up to a complete stranger in the Real World and proposition them for sex? No? Well, don't do it here.

2. Thinking that this is just a game, and none of your actions matter.

Just because you see SL as a game doesn't mean that everyone else does. What you must remember is behind every avatar, is a human being. This person may be pulling their puppets strings, but they hold the emotions too. So acting like a complete prat may hurt them emotionally. Yes, in your eyes this IS a game, but by bearing in mind that people have feelings, you can avoid making a lot of enemies.

3. Forgetting to fill out your profile.

This is possibly one of my biggest pet peeves.
Ok granted, on your first few days on the grid, there is a lot going on and you have a lot to learn, so its not too bad that you have not completed your picks as yet. But, on the other hand. People who have been online for a few months should have at least considered it.

If you look at your profile as your shop window, you will understand why it should be filled in well.
It's the first place people look when they meet you, as it tells them all of the basics that they need to know. In fact, I think people should have a profile in RL. Would avoid a lot of awkward situations. See the post "Profile Perfection" for tips on how to fill yours out.

So go on, keep adding more on the comments. Lets help out all of those people who are a little shocked by other peoples reactions.
